Protecting New York's first English settlement for 140 years—from a group of concerned citizens in 1886 to a modern fire department serving our community today.
Southold was founded in 1640 as the first English settlement in New York State. Nearly 250 years later, in January 1886, residents assembled in Belmont Hall to establish formal fire protection for their growing community.
What began as two companies with hand-drawn equipment has grown into a fully-equipped modern fire department with three companies, responding to nearly 800 calls annually across 28 square miles of the North Fork.
Original hand pumper still preserved at the firehouse. Still capable of throwing water almost 100 feet.
Donated in 1889 as Southold's first fire alarm. Still displayed in front of the firehouse.
Recently restored and still used in parades today. Was deployed to Greenport Boat Yard Fire before official dedication.
